When my son was diagnosed with Perthes, he was in Fragmentation stage. That was 6 months ago and he is still dealing with fragmentation. The most significant change for my son has been the pain associated with this stage. We manage with ibuprofen, heat, and distractions like family game night and a new video game or two!
We have a strength and stretching routine that we do at home to maintain range of motion. “Containment” is important during this phase and in reossification to protect the growing bone. Though every treatment is different, my son has been on activity restriction since diagnosis. We have worked with neighbors, friends, and his school to modify his activities and ensure he doesn’t over-do it. He uses crutches and a wheelchair as necessary, for example, school field trips. Working with the school is crucial.
