I was diagnosed with unilateral Perthes at age 8. I remember lots of doctor visits, some pain, and lots of time modifying the things I was no longer allowed to do. I had to modify gymnastics and take crutches to school. Still, I healed well and didn’t require surgery.
After all the restriction and monitoring, I remember being told that I was “healed.” X-rays showed a relatively symmetrical, rounded femoral head. I returned to normal activities. That was 23 years ago. While some adults have experienced an early hip replacement, I have not. I practice yoga now and have some days of pain but I maintain an active lifestyle, running several times a week, swimming and skiing too!
